Hello from the farm,
This past week has been all about the flowers, specifically getting all our spring blooms organised.
The narcissus bulbs have arrived and have been planted. About 700 of them, which at the time of ordering sounded like it wasn't enough until I bent over to plant the first one.
The ranunculus need pre-sprouting before planting out. There's only 400 of them because I was trying to start small. We are also planting some tulips this year and sweet peas are also in the mix and they will need to be germinated and trellises built.
The poppies are here too; the rare Italian Colibri seeds. Huge blooms of up to 15cm, incredible colours, and very little encouragement is required to order them. I mean who can resist buying seeds called "Rosa Intenso Salmonato".
Larkspur is going in and the rest of our hardy annuals, will be germinated indoors and planted in spring (with some frost protection). Did I mention I was not going to plant any annuals because they are too much hard work? Sigh.....
Shortly the peonies, and all my bare root trees (flowering species as well as our foliage hedgerows) will arrive so we have to build the no dig beds and run irrigation.
So while a flower farm seems incredibly romantic it's actually lots of intense work but I know that the rewards will be amazing and growing flowers is a great form of therapy.
