Do you talk to plants?

15 February, 2026  |  Summer, Farm

Hello from the farm,

Do you talk to plants? I do - I talk to my flowers, my trees and my garden. With the relentless heat of the past few weeks, it has been in a "please survive" type of tone, as we are operating the farm in 100% protection mode. Summer has been hot. Properly hot. It's slightly cooler today, which I'm very happy about! I don't do heat particularly well unless there's tropical water and a pool bar involved. Watching hot westerly winds fry pasture has a way of frying your patience too.

But the sunflowers seem entirely unfazed. They have decided that this is their moment. While the rest of us have been negotiating with the weather, they are just getting on with it. Tall. Bright. Completely unbothered. I've been cutting them daily to fill the house — they last for days and look mildly triumphant about it. They have such positive little faces. So my conversations with the sunflowers are different. They just get my admiration and compliments.

An evening walk through the field, on golden hour near sunset, is truly magical. Our sunflower field is at the bottom of a one acre paddock that we are turning into a flower farm, but more about that later!
