Don't use water to boil eggs

2 June, 2026

Hello from the farm,

Soft-boiled eggs with toast soldiers may be one of the greatest comfort foods of childhood. Dipping buttered strips of toast into runny yolks still feels like a real treat, even as an adult.

I'm aware this may upset traditionalists, but I now make soft-boiled eggs in the air fryer. And honestly, I'm not sure I'm going back.

I did use the traditional method for years, but the air fryer removes most of the drama. There's something slightly absurd about "boiling" eggs without any actual boiling involved, but bringing an entire saucepan of water to the boil just to cook something that already arrives in its own waterproof packaging feels unnecessarily theatrical, once you've tried this air-fryer hack.

You just put the eggs straight in the basket (I use the wire rack to allow air underneath) and let the hot air do the work. No water. No saucepan. No standing around waiting for water to boil. You can wander off and make a coffee while breakfast quietly sorts itself out.

Once you work out the timing for your particular air fryer, the eggs come out the same every time. Which is particularly useful when you own approximately two thousand chickens and boiled eggs become a fairly regular part of life.

Air Fryer "Boiled" Eggs

Place eggs straight into the air fryer basket. Size of the eggs and their temperature all change the timing slightly.

Cook at 130°C for:

Soft-boiled: 8 minutes
Jammy: 10 minutes
Medium: 12 minutes
Hard-boiled: 14 minutes

Don't forget to put your toast in!
