Farm Life

Our hens have a better view than most

9 June, 2026  |  Winter, Farm, Farmlife

Hello from the farm,

Mark took this photo this week and it reminded me that sometimes I forget to appreciate where we actually live.

The fresh snow on the Main Range has returned, the paddocks are covered in frost each morning and the hens are busy doing exactly what hens do......Completely ignoring the scenery. They have one of the best views in Australia.

We have a great view of The Main Range. Our egg carton labels have our view printed on them. That pointy mountain is Mt Perisher, with back perisher to the right of it, then Mt Blue Calf and Blue Cow. On a clear night, in winter we can watch the fireworks at Perisher.

Winter is definitely here; every day starts with frost crunching underfoot. While most sensible people are still asleep, Mark is down at the girls' paddocks at 5.00am getting the water flowing and, on particularly cold mornings, flushing the lines with hot water. The hens don't seem especially grateful for this service, but that's farming.

But those early mornings also offer sunrises, often with incredible mountain skies, morning alpenglow on the range and two thousand chickens immediately demanding breakfast and busily starting their work for the day (rain, snow or shine), producing your eggs.
