Hello from the farm,
With the weekend's snowfall, I've started thinking about winter comfort food. Not soups, not warming casseroles, but Eggnog obviously! It's kind of food... for the soul.
Which made me realise something - We all know what eggnog is. Americans seem to drink litres (gallons?) of it. Every Christmas movies are full of people wandering around with mugs of the stuff, and yet here in Australia it rarely makes an appearance, which is a shame, because it's essentially hot custard that you're allowed to drink.
What's not to love?
It also happens to be a very nice way to use really good fresh eggs. Think vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon rather than anything overly sweet and yes, if you're feeling festive (or simply cold enough), a splash of brandy, bourbon or dark rum is entirely acceptable, after all, it is winter and Christmas in July is as good an excuse as any.
For a great eggnog recipe I'm turning yet again to Jamie Oliver, because he just does comfort food really well.
Jamie's Ultimate Eggnog recipe
This is the recipe that I use and using a cinnamon whiskey such as Fireball or JD, Tennessee Fire takes it to another level. I'm also pretty certain that adding Wildbrumby baked apple schnapps may be an excellent option as well. It certainly seems like a good excuse to find out?
