Building the dream

When reality arrives & eats your grand vision

25 August, 2026

Hello from the farm,

I've realised something about the way my brain works.

Whenever I get an idea, I don't start at the beginning.

I start with the finished product - The grand vision.

Take the flower farm. I didn't picture a paddock that needed fencing, soil testing, ripping, compost, irrigation and approximately twenty thousand holes dug in it. I pictured the finished flower farm; Long rows overflowing with flowers. Sweet peas climbing their trellises. Huge drifts of peonies. Flowering hedgerows buzzing with bees. Buckets of flowers being cut every morning. Can you hear the music... "The hills are alive...."

There is quite a gap between the grand vision and reality. That gap is apparently filled with wheelbarrows, but in my head, the vision is magnificent. Unfortunately, my imagination has absolutely no interest in the middle bit; the bit that involves all the hard work and poor Mark cops most it.

Perhaps it's not such a bad way to approach things because if I started with a spreadsheet detailing every hour of work required to turn the grand vision into reality, there's a very good chance none of these projects would ever get started.

Spring is getting very close now, the jonquils are flowering, thousands of seedlings are arriving next week (and another lot in November) and in addition, I'm propagating thousands of seeds. The peonies are in, and the first tiny signs of the flower farm that I've been carrying around in my head are finally beginning to appear.

Did I mention that those pretty little crimson rosellas (insert another word) have snipped all our sweet peas?

So much for the grand vision - reality arrives and eats it! So it is going to require netting. Sigh.....
