Building the dream

I'm trying to keep Darryl Alive

1 September, 2026

Hello from the farm

We are now well underway building our one-acre flower farm. With more to follow, but please don't tell Mark that just yet. He is currently unaware of my plans for the 1 acre paddock on the other side of the driveway. I may have mumbled something about it under my breath, so I think I'm covered.

We've reached the slightly alarming stage where all the measuring, planning and ordering turns into actual plants that need somewhere to live. Until now, I've been able to move things around quite successfully on a spreadsheet, but many of my little babies have arrived and need their new homes. So this week we're racing to finish beds and irrigation before they outgrow their temporary accommodation, while I'm also racing back and forth to the hotel. Spring has come on fast and it's not good for either business!

The flower farm is a massive landscaping project so this week we got Darryl to help with the planning. We sent him up for a flight over the farm to take some aerial photos so I can work out exactly where everything is going. Darryl is our drone, in case you were picturing a helicopter pilot.

Mark may eventually kill Darryl for providing me with aerial views of paddocks I hadn't previously considered developing. Our blue dogs already think he's a frisbee and have been trying to jump up and eat him. Not sure if he's actually safe with me either - I've already crashed him once, which turned out to be a surprisingly effective way of pruning tall weeds.
