Hello from the farm,
Remember those 140 metres of hedgerows I told you about back in June? The ones that arrived looking like very expensive sticks? Well, they're finally planted and they still look like very expensive sticks.
I spent months choosing the mix of plants and as usual, restraint wasn't really part of the process. They are not neat hedges of one thing repeated down the fence line. More of an enormous mixed buffet of things I want to cut for bouquets. I had a few lilac bushes at Gundaroo, but now have fifty of them to fill my home and my heart every spring.
The hedgerows have taken a lot of planning and it helps enormously if you have a husband with a shovel because all of these plants required holes. More than 300 of them, which Mark dug by hand. There are moments in a marriage when you instinctively know it's best not to say anything. Somewhere around the 250th hole, I decided that this was one of them.
But now we have hundreds of very carefully chosen, lovingly planted sticks and I couldn't be happier. Mark hasn't commented but he's probably still thinking about hole number 251.
